2K Games ist ein im Januar 2005 in Manhattan/New York gegründetes Vertriebslabel des Computerspiele-Publishers Take 2 Interactive.[1] Der Sitz wurde im Jahr 2007 nach Novato, Kalifornien, verlegt.[2]

Unternehmen Bearbeiten

2K Games umfasst insgesamt die drei Abteilungen 2K, 2K Sports und 2K Play. Unter diesen Namen werden Vollpreisspiele jeglicher Couleur (z. B. Shooter, Strategie), sowie Sportspiele respektive Casual Games & Edutainmentsoftware vertrieben.

2K Games selbst kann als Nachfolger von Gathering of Developers betrachtet werden, da die ersten Spiele 2K Games’ zuvor bei Gathering erscheinen sollten, darunter zum Beispiel Close Combat: First to Fight und Stronghold 2.

2K Sports ging, mit der Übernahme von Visual Concepts und Kush Games, quasi aus ESPN Video Games hervor. Die erst im September 2007 gegründete[3] Sparte 2K Play ging aus Global Star Software hervor, welches zuvor schon als Casual-Games-/Low-Price-Label Take 2 Interactives aktiv war.

  • 2K Marin (im Dezember 2007 gegründet[6]; umfasst Entwickler von 2K Australia und ehemals 2K Boston, die sich aufgrund von Differenzen mit dem Leiter, Ken Levine, abgespaltet haben); 2010 Umbenennung und Eingliederung von 2k Australia (zuvor Irrational Games) in 2k Marin.

  • Frog City Software (bereits vor Gründung von 2K Games Teil von Take 2 Interactive; vermutlich mit Firaxis vereint)
  • Indie Built (im Dezember 2004 von Microsoft an Take 2 verkauft[9]; Ende April 2006 geschlossen[10])
  • PopTop Software (bereits vor Gründung von 2K Games Teil von Take 2 Interactive; Anfang 2007 mit Firaxis vereint[11])

Den meisten Angestellten wurden Stellen in anderen Take-2-Studios angeboten. Der Zusammenschluss von Frog City Software und Firaxis Games wurde nie offiziell bestätigt, wird jedoch allgemein angenommen: einerseits durch die Einstellung des Projektes Snow, andererseits durch die enge Verbindung Frog Citys zu PopTop Software sowie dadurch, dass die offizielle Webseite des Studios www.frogcity.com nicht mehr erreichbar ist.
