Carlos Lechuga

Carlos Lechuga (born in 1983) is a Cuban film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for directing Spanish-language feature films such as Melaza, a Comedy-Drama and Santa & Andres, a drama about a dissident gay novelist. Lechuga also works as a writer and journalist for various magazines and cultural publications and has worked as script advisor and second unit director side by side with directors such as Humberto Solás, Juan Carlos Tabío, Juan Carlos Cremata, Iciar Bollain and Ernesto Daranas.

Life and career

Lechuga was born in Havana, Cuba in 1983. He trained as a film director in the Instituto Superior de Arte (Higher Art Institute) and continued his education at San Antonio de Los Baños International Cinema and Television University (EICTV) to specialize in screenplay writing.

Lechuga has written several film screenplays, such as El edén perdido (The Lost Eden), Club Habana and Penumbras (Shadows). He has been awarded screenplay awards like the Julio Alejandro Award, the Havana Film Festival Unpublished Screenplay Coral Award and the Screenplay Award at the Gibara Film Festival.

His work as writer and director includes short films such as Los Bañistas (The swimmers), which won the Coral Award in the category of Best Short at Havana Film Festival, as well as a Silver Hugo at Chicago International Film Festival.

His first feature film Melaza (Molasses), a coproduction with ARTE France Cinema, premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). It was awarded the price of the Best Film at the New England Festival of Ibero-American Conema and Best Latin-American Film at Málaga Film Festival as well as the Newcomer of the Year in 2013, which is the main award of Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival.

Santa y Andrés (Santa & Andres), his second feature film as a writer/director had its world premiere at Toronto Film Festival and its European premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The film has covered in more than 70 International Film Festivals, receiving critical claim and awards like the Best Iberian-American Film Award at Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2017.

In 2019, Lechuga collaborated with renowned Cuban artist Marco Castillo to direct the Art Film Generacion (Generation), a stunning visual piece that has traveled to galleries and cultural centers around the world, including the Havana Art Biennial 2019 and ARCOmadrid 2020 – International Contemporary Art Fair.

His first book En brazos de la mujer casada (In the arms of the married woman), a collection of his chronicles, interviews, and texts written between 2019 and 2020 was published by Editorial Hypermedia in the spring of 2020.
