Life and work

Bearbeiten

Nadja Sarwat is the daughter of a pharmacist and grew up in Cairo and Vienna . She studied theatre, film and media studies as well as journalism and communication studies at Universität Wien.

She started her career in 1988 as a freelance journalist with the daily newspaper Der Standard and subsequently wrote for media such as Kurier, Arbeiter-Zeitung, profil, Falter, Welt der Frau and TV-Media. In 1997 she was recruited by News as editor for their arts section, where she stayed until 2016, latterly as editor in chief for film, and specialized in interviewing stars and reporting on international film festivals. She also wrote a family column and a blog for the magazine.

In 2016 she switched to the arts section at orf.at, the news portal of ORF; since that time she has worked as a writer and provides video reports. In the field of culture, her areas of specialization are film reporting and star interviews. She also focuses on socio-political articles dealing with women, family and migration. Her report for the 2017 International Women’s Day on orf.at on “Single parents in the poverty trap” and activist Maria Stern informed society at large about the shortcomings of Austrian maintenance law and was partly responsible for extensive debate between Austrian parliamentary parties on legal reform.[1]

Nadja Sarwat lives in Vienna with her three sons.
