Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser,

diese CD-ROM enthält eine Momentaufnahme der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia (http://de.wikipedia.org), einer freien Internet-Enzyklopädie, an der von Mai 2001 bis heute mehrere tausend Menschen mitgearbeitet haben. Allein durch die Arbeit Freiwilliger sind so bereits über 130.000 Artikel (Stand: 1. September 2004) entstanden.

Wir, die Redakteure von Directmedia Publishing und die an der Vorbereitung dieser CD beteiligten Wikipedianer, haben die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit der letzten Wochen sehr genossen. Ihnen wünschen wir nun ein spannendes Leseerlebnis, eine erfolgreiche Recherche auf dieser CD, neue Einsichten und die Befriedigung Ihres Wissensdurstes.

Die CD-ROM-Edition basiert auf der deutschsprachigen Online-Enzyklopädie.

Ihr Inhalt entspricht dem Stand der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia vom 1. September 2004, 02.00 Uhr und enthält damit über 130.000 Artikel.

Das Konzept, einen bestimmten Redaktionsstand der ständig in Weiterbearbeitung begriffenen Online-Enzyklopädie festzuhalten und auf Datenträger zu bannen, wurde vom Verlag »Directmedia Publishing«, einigen aktiven Wikipedianern und dem Verein »Wikimedia Deutschland - Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens« entwickelt. Im Verlagsprogramm von Directmedia Publishing fehlte bislang ein allgemeines aktuelles Lexikon; und die Software der Digitalen Bibliothek eignet sich hervorragend für die Bewältigung größter Textmengen. Mit über 300.000 Bildschirmseiten ist dies gleichzeitig die bisher umfangreichste Ausgabe der CD-ROM-Reihe. Für die Wikipedia ergibt sich mit einer Offline-Version die Möglichkeit, über das Internet hinaus Bekanntheit zu erlangen und neue Autoren zu gewinnen, die noch nicht oder nicht so sehr mit dem Internet und der Möglichkeit, eigene Inhalte dort zu veröffentlichen, vertraut sind.

Das gemeinsame Projekt ist inhaltlich und technisch ein hochinteressantes Experiment. Da sich das Lexikon in manchen Dingen doch sehr von einer redaktionell betreuten Enzyklopädie unterscheidet, sind hier einige Hinweise zu Gestaltung und Handhabung nötig:

• Der Redaktionsstand wurde nicht beschönigt, d.h. bereits angelegte Artikel, zu denen nur wenig geschrieben wurde, oder offensichtlich noch mitten in der Bearbeitung stehende Artikel wurden so belassen. Für den Nutzer ergibt sich daraus immerhin der Hinweis, dass das angelegte Stichwort in der Online-Wikipedia vermutlich bereits weiter fortgeschritten ist. Zudem kann jeder Nutzer diese Artikel online ändern. So möchte diese CD-ROM als Offline-Medium die Weiterbearbeitung der Inhalte nicht behindern, sondern vielmehr die Möglichkeit bieten, das bereits versammelte Wissen offline zu nutzen und trotzdem komfortabel zur Online-Wikipedia zu gelangen, um dort direkt Änderungen und Ergänzungen einzugeben. Deshalb können die Artikel der Online-Wikipedia über das Kontextmenü der rechten Maustaste direkt angesprungen und verändert bzw. ergänzt werden. Dazu muss vorher eine Internetverbindung hergestellt werden.
• Nicht alle Bestandteile der Online-Wikipedia konnten vollständig übernommen werden; so musste beispielsweise aus Platzgründen eine relativ kleine Bildauswahl getroffen werden.
• Die Inhalte der Enzyklopädie sind frei und können von Jedermann nach den Bestimmungen der GNU Freie Dokumentationslizenz genutzt, verändert und weiterverbreitet werden.
• Die Wikipedia erscheint in dieser Ausgabe mit der neu entwickelten Software für Windows der Digitalen Bibliothek, die hier erstmals ausgeliefert wird. Diese enthält gegenüber der Vorläufer-Version »Digibib3« wesentlich erweiterte Funktionalitäten und optische Verbesserungen. Eine gänzlich neue Funktion ist die Bibliotheksverwaltung mehrerer oder aller Bände der Digitalen Bibliothek, die die Festplatteninstallation unterstützt und bandübergreifende Recherchen ermöglicht. Die CD-ROM enthält außerdem die Software »MacDigibib« für Mac OS X.

Um der Vorläufigkeit dieser ersten Offline-Version Rechnung zu tragen, ist eine Fortsetzung der Kooperation zwischen Directmedia Publishing und dem Verein Wikimedia Deutschland geplant. Wir würden uns freuen, wenn möglichst viele Nutzer der Digitalen Bibliothek durch eigene Beiträge in der Wikipedia dazu beitragen, dass die zweite Ausgabe im Frühjahr 2005 wegen ihres Umfangs auf einer DVD erscheinen muss.

Zur Software

Für einen schnellen Zugriff auf die Stichwörter empfiehlt es sich, die im Funktionsbereich »Register« eingerichteten Personen- und Stichwortverzeichnisse zu verwenden. Diese können wahlweise an- oder ausgeschaltet werden. Durch die Auswahl eines Eintrags mit der Maus oder mit Hilfe des Eingabefeldes wird der dazugehörige Eintrag im Textfenster aufgerufen. Sämtliche Personendaten sind im Funktionsbereich »Tabellen« in tabellarischer Form zusammengefasst. Die Tabelleneinträge sind mit den Textseiten, auf die sie sich beziehen, verknüpft, sodass die Textseite zum Personenartikel wechselt, wenn man einen Eintrag auswählt; über die Auswahl »Tabelle filtern« im Kontextmenü der Tabelle können die Tabelleneinträge nach bestimmten Inhalten durchsucht werden.

So können durch die Eingabe »Kurzbeschreibung enthält Komponist« beispielsweise alle in der Enzyklopädie mit einem Artikel vertretenen Komponisten ermittelt werden. Durch die Recherchefunktionen der Digitalen Bibliothek ergeben sich wesentliche Vorteile bei der Durchforstung des großen Datenbestands der Wikipedia, wie z.B. das Abspeichern individueller Fundstellenlisten bei der Volltextsuche, das Markieren und Kommentieren von Textstellen und vor allem das vergleichende Durchsuchen der Wikipedia in Kombination mit anderen Lexika der Digitalen Bibliothek. So können Wikipedia-Inhalte leicht mit analogen Stichworteinträgen anderer Lexika abgeglichen werden.

Eine ausführliche Beschreibung aller zur Verfügung stehenden Funktionen der »Digitalen Bibliothek« bieten die »Hilfe«-Funktion, die jederzeit über die Taste »F1« aufgerufen werden kann, sowie das der Ausgabe als PDF-Datei beiliegende Handbuch.

Zur Entstehung dieser CD

Anfang Juli 2004 trat der Verlag Directmedia Publishing an die aktiven Wikipedianer mit der Idee heran, eine CD-Ausgabe der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia herauszubringen. Da eine Verbreitung der Inhalte ganz im Sinne des Projekts ist, stieß diese Idee sofort auf breite Zustimmung. Schnell fanden sich Experten beider Partner zusammen, um das Projekt voranzubringen und konzeptionelle sowie technische Fragen zu klären.

Es zeigte sich schnell, dass eine rein automatische Konvertierung der Inhalte nicht möglich war. Und so unterzogen zahlreiche engagierte Wikipedianer den gesamten Inhalt einem kursorischen Review-Prozess. Dabei wurden mögliche Urheberrechtsverletzungen, bereits als sehr mangelhaft erkannte Artikel sowie Arbeitshilfen wie Artikellisten und Themenportale entfernt.

Im Verlauf des einwöchigen Review-Prozesses wurden 2.177 von 134.153 Artikeln aus dem Stand der Wikipedia vom 1. September 2004 entfernt. Aufgrund des enormen Umfangs der Wikipedia konnten jedoch nicht alle Artikel besehen und schon gar nicht noch einmal korrekturgelesen werden. Insofern bietet diese CD trotz der Überarbeitung ein realistisches Abbild der Wikipedia – mit reichlich Ecken und Kanten.

Da aus Speicherplatzgründen nicht alle Bilder auf eine CD-ROM passen und man die Bildauswahl nicht dem Zufall überlassen wollte, war auch hier Handarbeit angesagt. Etwa 5.000 Bilder wurden von den fleißigen Helfern ausgewählt. Nach dem Review-Prozess wurden alle Artikel in das Format der Digitalen Bibliothek konvertiert.

Was ist die Wikipedia?

Als Enzyklopädie bezeichnet man den Versuch der vollständigen Darstellung des Wissens zu einem bestimmten Thema oder des gesamten Wissens der Welt; [...] ihr kennzeichnendes Merkmal gegenüber anderen Literaturgattungen ist der Universalitätsanspruch. – aus dem Artikel »Enzyklopädie«, Wikipedia vom 20. Die Wikipedia ist der Versuch, eine völlig neue Art von Enzyklopädie zu erstellen. Sie wird nicht von einer handverlesenen Redaktion innerhalb der Mauern eines Verlagsgebäudes geschrieben, sondern entsteht in aller Öffentlichkeit; und jedermann ist herzlich eingeladen mitzuschreiben. Möglich macht dies ein sogenanntes Wiki, eine spezielle Form von Redaktionssystem, das es jedermann erlaubt, die Inhalte der Website ohne technische Kenntnisse zu verändern.

Mehrere tausend registrierte und anonyme Autoren auf der ganzen Welt haben seit dem Start des Projektes im Jahr 2001 von diesem Angebot Gebrauch gemacht. Auf diese Art sind bereits über eine Million Artikel in mehr als 100 Sprachen entstanden. Und ein Ende ist nicht abzusehen: Rund um die Uhr arbeiten die freiwilligen, unbezahlten Autoren am weiteren Ausbau; sie verfassen Tag für Tag etwa 3.000 neue Artikel und verbessern bestehende.

Kein Wikipedia-Artikel ist jemals fertig; alles ist »Work in progress«. Ständig ergänzen Autoren aktuelle Ereignisse und neue Entwicklungen und sind dabei oft sogar schneller als klassische Medien. Die Momentaufnahme auf dieser CD teilt hingegen den Nachteil herkömmlicher Enzyklopädien: Sie spiegelt den Stand eines fixen Zeitpunktes wider, in diesem Fall den der Wikipedia am 1. September 2004.

Eine weitere Besonderheit zeichnet die Wikipedia aus: Sie ist vollständig frei. Solange Sie die Autoren und die Quelle nennen, dürfen Sie sie frei kopieren, Freunden schenken, ausdrucken und verkaufen oder auch verändern. Dafür sorgt die »GNU Freie Dokumentationslizenz«, die ihren Ursprung in der Freie-Software-Bewegung hat und vergleichbar mit der Lizenz ist, der das Betriebssystems Linux seinen Erfolg verdankt.

Wer hat einen bestimmten Artikel verfasst?

An fast allen Artikeln haben mehrere Autoren mitgewirkt. Wer zu einem Artikel beigetragen hat, erfahren Sie, wenn Sie im entsprechenden Artikel auf Online Wikipedia: Versionen (Symbol V) klicken. Dort finden Sie eine Übersicht über jede einzelne Änderung an dem Artikel mit der Angabe der IP-Adressen nicht angemeldeter Benutzer oder den Benutzernamen der angemeldeten Autoren. Diese können Sie wiederum anklicken und gelangen dadurch zu weiteren Informationen. Über die bürgerliche Identität des jeweiligen Autors geben die frei gewählten Benutzernamen allerdings nur selten Aufschluss. Manche der Autoren haben auf ihrer Benutzerseite jedoch Kontaktdaten und einige persönliche Informationen eingestellt. Vielen können Sie, wenn Sie sich auch angemeldet haben, eine E-Mail zukommen lassen. Am einfachsten können Sie jedoch die entsprechende Diskussionsseite der Autoren nutzen, beispielsweise um Fragen zu stellen.

Kann ich den Inhalten vertrauen?

Mehr noch als bei herkömmlichen Werken ist bei der Wikipedia kritisches Lesen gefragt. Renommierte Enzyklopädie-Projekte sichern die Richtigkeit der Angaben dadurch, dass sie nur anerkannte Fachleute mit dem Verfassen von Artikeln betrauen. Doch selbst dann geschehen Irrtümer. An Wikipedia kann dagegen jeder mitarbeiten, ohne seine Qualifikation und seine Intentionen offenzulegen. So stößt man neben fundierten, von Universitätsdozenten und anderen Fachleuten verfassten Artikeln in der Wikipedia durchaus auch auf Schülerarbeiten.

Um die Richtigkeit der Inhalte sicherzustellen, verlässt sich die Wikipedia auf ihre Leser und die große Gemeinschaft der aktiven Autoren. In einem konstanten Review-Prozess begutachten die Wikipedianer Änderungen an Artikeln, prüfen zweifelhafte Angaben nach und korrigieren Irrtümer.

Kriterien für die Zuverlässigkeit von Inhalten können sein: Zusammenarbeit vieler Autoren, Angabe von Quellen und formale Konsistenz. Wie andere Lexika arbeitet auch Wikipedia an Mechanismen, Fehler systematisch zu vermeiden und die Artikel qualitativ aufzuwerten. Wem es auf gesicherte Informationen ankommt, sollte auf jeden Fall weitere Quellen hinzuziehen und wichtige Daten mehrfach überprüfen.

Wie kann ich mich beteiligen?

Wikipedia lebt von der Mitarbeit begeisterter Freiwilliger, die ihr Wissen der Allgemeinheit schenken. Auch Sie können sich daran beteiligen. So können Sie etwa als Autor selbst neue Artikel verfassen oder bestehende verbessern, indem Sie zusätzliche Informationen ergänzen oder Falsches korrigieren. Daneben gibt es auch die Möglichkeit, Artikel aus anderssprachigen Wikipedias - vor allem der englischen - zu übersetzen. Schließlich können Sie sich auch auf den zu jedem Artikel gehörenden Diskussionsseiten äußern, um so auf Fehler oder Mängel im entsprechenden Artikel hinzuweisen. So oder so: Auf jeden Fall freuen wir uns über Ihre Mitarbeit.

Am besten unterstützen Sie die Wikipedia, in dem Sie sie nutzen – sei es als Leser oder aktiv als Autor. Die Wikipedia ist aber auch auf finanzielle Unterstützung angewiesen. Denn das Wachstum und die rasant steigenden Besucherzahlen erfordern einen ständigen Ausbau der technischen Infrastruktur.

Kontroverse Artikel

Subjektiv gefärbte Artikel werden in der Wikipedia mit einem Hinweis auf mangelnde Neutralität gekennzeichnet, bis sich alle Parteien auf einen Kompromiss geeinigt haben. Für die CD-Version haben wir die meisten solcher umstrittenen Artikel herausgenommen. Bei folgenden Artikeln haben wir uns entschlossen, sie mit aufzunehmen, da sie wesentliche Themen behandeln und um zu zeigen, wie kontroverse Themen in der Wikipedia behandelt werden:

Aus der Diskussion und Bearbeitungsgeschichte, die in der Online-Version einsehbar sind, lassen sich die verschiedenen Streitpunkte erkennen. Bei einer Eskalation des Streites kommt es zu einem so genannten Edit-War, bei dem die beiden Parteien in kurzen Abständen die Änderungen des jeweils anderen rückgängig machen. In solch einem Fall wird der Artikel in aller Regel von einem Administrator vorübergehend für weitere Bearbeitungen gesperrt, damit sich die Diskussion auf die Diskussionsseite verlagert. Als Beispiel für einen solchen Artikel im Streitzustand ist Freiwirtschaft mit auf die CD gekommen.

Listenartikel

In der Wikipedia gibt es rund 3000 Listen. In einigen Fällen dienen diese der Projektorganisation, in anderen sind sie auch sinnvoll als eigene Artikel. Da sie in der Community umstritten sind, haben wir für die CD-Version die meisten davon herausgenommen. Hier einige Beispiele von Listen, die wir stehengelassen haben.

Zu kurze Artikel

Viele Artikel gehen anfangs nicht über eine reine Definition wie "Ein Apfelbaum ist ein Baum, an dem Äpfel hängen" hinaus. Diese Artikel, so genannte Stubs, werden über eine gewisse Zeitspanne hinweg beobachtet und – so sie nicht ausgebaut, verbessert, präzisiert oder neu geschrieben wurden – gelöscht. 0. PREAMBLE
