“American Veda is an illuminating, gracefully written and remarkably thorough account of India’s spectacular impact on Western religion and spirituality.” Deepak Chopra “American Veda shows us how we got to where we are. It chronicles a revolution in consciousness initiated by the voices of India’s Sanatana Dharma (eternal religion) and describes its lasting influence on our culture, from gurus, meditation, and yoga to sitar music and aromatic curries. Savor it.” – Michael Bernard Beckwith, author of Spiritual Liberation: Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential

“In a delightful, compelling way, American Veda shows how India’s ancient wisdom has permeated our lives, including many of the self-improvement teachings that have benefited millions. I loved reading this book.” -Marci Shimoff, NY Times bestselling author, Happy for No Reason and Love for No Reason

“This book fills a void: scholars have mined the subject of Indian spiritual philosophy, but mostly for the academy, despite the broad impact of Vedantism on popular culture. Goldberg gets it.” Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Demonstrates the far reach of Indian thought into the American psyche and sense of spiritual self. Goldberg presents a well written, superbly researched book. It should be read by all the 15 million Americans practicing meditation and yoga!” – Christopher Chapple, Doshi Professor of Indic and Comparative Theology, Loyola Marymount University “In American Veda, Philip Goldberg offers us an authoritative and highly entertaining look at the contemporary history of Hindu-inspired spirituality in the West. Written with a practitioner’s heart and a journalist’s eye, this book is indispensable for anyone who wants to understand the deeper philosophy and culture behind today’s yoga boom.” – Sally Kempton, author of Meditation for the Love of It and Awakening Shakti

“A wonderfully comprehensive history … that is positive, tremendously insightful, and illuminating. For anyone interested in the deep influence of yoga philosophy in American culture, I highly recommended this masterful book.” – John Friend, Founder of Anusara Yoga

“An immensely smart, wise, brilliantly written account of Vedanta in America. This book should be required reading for everyone interested in ecumenical spirituality which is the one hope for the survival of the human race, and India’s great gift to us in our crisis.” Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope: The Guide to Social Activism and The Sun at Midnight “American Veda is a thrilling examination of how deeply the ancient, vibrant philosophies of India have penetrated western culture. No American can read this book without being amazed at the degree to which these factors affect our daily life. This book is not a dry sociocultural analysis; it contains wisdom on every page, in Phil Goldberg’s splendid style. This is a hugely significant contribution.” — Larry Dossey, M.D., author of The Power of Premonitions, Reinventing Medicine and Healing Words “Philip Goldberg has provided an excellent overview of the Yoga movement in the West and its Vedic connections. . . .I hope that the western Yoga community is able to understand the importance of his work and can look to a presentation of Yoga that embraces and ennobles the entire human spirit and liberates our deeper Self and consciousness, not simply afford, us greater flexibility at a physical level!” – David Frawley (Pandit Vamadeva Shastri), founder and director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies

“Intriguing reading, fascinating profiles and great storytelling of Yoga luminaries adapting the teachings to fit their modern American life. This book inspires us all to continue to grow, deepen in our body, mind, and spiritual journey.” – Lilias Folan, PBS Host and author Lilias! Yoga Gets Better with Age

“Documents an important cultural change and is an impressive book: informed and informative, well researched and readable.” – Roger Walsh MD, Ph.D., University of California Medical School, author of Essential Spirituality: The Seven Central Practices

Reviews & Endorsements Goldberg presents the history of America’s fascination with Hinduism in very readable prose packed with anecdotes and biographical details that immediately draw us in. . . . There have been several books for a mainstream audience that trace Buddhism’s history in America …, but we’ve been without the equivalent for Hinduism until now. American Veda, as entertaining as it is informative, ably fills the void.” – Tricycle magazine

“[A]n authoritative, engaging survey of why … the flowers of Eastern practices have thrived in Western soil. . . . [C]hapters move like a succession of ocean swells, easily accessible, and Goldberg applies sharp strokes of the brush to capture particular viewpoints or dilemmas. . . . The popularity today of all things Eastern, including retreats, mala beads, mindful eating and yoga, is a hopeful sign, he says, that we are experiencing a genuine ‘uptick in interreligious and interethnic harmony.’” – Los Angeles Times

“In this important and engaging book, Philip Goldberg astutely examines how Hinduism has been constructed and consumed within the larger American spiritual landscape. A must read for those interested in Hinduism and its transmission.” Varun Soni, Dean of Religious Life, University of Southern California “Goldberg weaves a tale as only a true storyteller can, drawing the reader into this Vedic web that has no weaver, providing us with a fresh view of how Vedic strands have woven their way into the daily fabric of every American, whether they like it or not. I hope you enjoy, as much as I did, Goldberg’s assemblage of characters as he masterfully unfolds this ancient play of spiritual unfolding that is just now beginning to emerge into early adolescence in America.” – Richard Miller, PhD, author of Yoga Nidra: A Meditative Practice for Deep Relaxation and Healing, founding president of the Integrative Restoration Institute. “Before setting out on Philip Goldberg’s breathtaking trek across time, few would guess how deeply our culture has imbibed the Indian wisdoms. American Veda shows us something extraordinary, surprising, and precious about where we come from, who we are at this moment, and what we may yet become.” – Chip Hartranft, author of The Yoga-Sutra Of Patañjali: a new translation with commentary. “Nothing short of remarkable. Within the pages of this fairly short volume, Goldberg manages to cover every major figure, movement, and idea that originated in India’s spiritual terrain and arrived on our shores to forever alter the landscape of our thought and culture….Writing with empathy and discernment, he covers highly controversial issues regarding the impact of the transmission of Indian spiritual culture in a way that inspires deeper understanding. American Veda is an insightful guide to the fascinating history of a phenomenon that will be seen in the future as one of the watershed moments of American history.” – Rita D. Sherma, Ph.D., Executive Director, School of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Taksha University

“American Veda is a landmark! Easy to read, it shines a light of understanding on the American Vedic Hindu path, which started with the transference of knowledge from India and its acceptance by the Americans of Western orientation. It is a path on which now, the immigrant Vedic Hindu community and its progeny are grafting onto and traveling along with many in the mainstream community, resulting in increased understanding. The integrated approach of this book helps fill in the gaps of this historical journey, especially for those of us who see ourselves as fellow travelers working to bridge the East-West divide.” – Anju Bhargava, Management Consultant and Founder of Hindu American Seva Charities

“Goldberg does yeoman service in chronicling the many ways India has influenced American—and, by extension, Western—culture, often very subtly.” Kirkus Reviews “American Veda is a bright light on the historical path to enlightenment in America. Philip Goldberg is an acharya of words and research. Highly recommended.” Larry Payne Ph.D., co-author, Yoga for Dummies, Yoga Rx & The Business of Teaching Yoga “American Veda delights readers as it analyzes developments that enrich the ground from which yoga in the United States now blossoms.” – Yoga Journal

“[A] vividly detailed account of how Indian spirituality, and particularly the concept from the Rig Veda of ‘one truth, many paths,’ has transformed American consciousness.” – Yoga International

“Goldberg’s chapters are campfire classics, dinner conversation, trivia facts that ignite and excite. He is telling a tale that is part epic melodrama, part detective novel and – of course – part love story. And for a reader (like myself) who was sparked by reading Emerson and Thoreau in high school, entranced by George Harrison’s use of the sitar in Beatles albums, well, American Veda is a must-read.” – LA Yoga magazine

“Whether the reader is a baby boomer and remembers the gurus and teachers of the 1960s and 1970s or a newcomer to Yoga and Eastern thought, there will be some reference to someone known or read or remembered, and a memory is triggered and a smile comes, savoring the journey. In that sense, American Veda is comfortable like a pair of favorite pajamas. It is clear that American society has moved ever closer to a worldview that resembles the core principles of the Vedic tradition.” – Beryl Bender Birch, Yoga Therapy Today

“The book is fascinating and entertaining, a history of the awakening consciousness in the West of which we are a part.” Light of Consciousness magazine “We are living at a time of a profound awakening of consciousness that is changing the world. Much of that awakening is due to the influence of Indian spirituality and its practical applications. . . . How that came about needed to be documented, and Philip Goldberg has done just that. And he has done it with a novelist’s gift for story-telling and a palpable love for many of the men and women who either brought the teachings from India or discovered it here and made it their own.” – Common Ground Magazine “From the transcendentalists to today’s cultural creatives, no aspect of American culture is left unexamined. The reader is led to a great appreciation of Eastern thought’s indelible imprint on life in America.” – Science of Mind magazine

“We imagine the US as a Christian island far from the exotic teachings of India. We imagine wrong. As Phil Goldberg’s masterful American Veda shows we have been under the sway of Hindu spiritual thought for centuries. If you want to understand American spirituality today, and get a glimpse into its future, read this book.” – Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Recovery, the Sacred Art

“American Veda offers both long-time students of Yoga and Vedanta and those new to this spiritual path an invaluable look at the trajectory of light shining from the East into Western culture. The research covered is extensive, yet Phil Goldberg’s writing style brings it forth with grace and ease. Students of Yoga will come away with a much clearer sense of the breadth and depth of the profound influence of the Vedas on the West.” – Ellen Grace O’Brian, Director, Center for Spiritual Enlightenment

“Compelling and insightful. Goldberg’s fine book is more evidence that we all share the same planet and that we have been influencing one another for millennia. There are no easy demarcations, no “east and west,” and no borders when it comes to the intellect and the spirit.” – Nathan Katz, Professor of Religious Studies; Director of the Program in the Study of Spirituality at Florida International University.

“It is true that the Beatles’ encounter with “mystic” India was an important religious event in the story of America’s encounter with Indian spirituality, but it was only one of the many events that have shaped that encounter, and our relationship. Goldberg does a wonderful job of exposing many of the other important pieces of that pivotal relationship. In the process, he helps show how much Hindu thinking has permeated and influenced so much of what America is today…and why it has made us better.” – Ramdas Lamb, Associate Professor of Religion, University of Hawai’i

“American Veda is a jewel! A masterful, superbly written and lucid account of the transformative impact of Vedic thought and practice on American spirituality. Goldberg covers it all. From Emerson and Vedic texts to Swami Vivekananda and the Vedanta Society, from the Self-Realization Fellowship, the Beatles, Transcendental Meditation and Yoga to Amma the contemporary ‘Hugging Saint,’ Goldberg is a superb guide. This is the book to read if you want to know how Vedanta, Yoga, and Meditation became main-stream in the West.” – M. Darrol Bryant, author of Religion in a New Key and Director, Centre for Dialogue and Spirituality in the World Religions, Renison University College/University of Waterloo, Canada

“In American Veda, Philip Goldberg surveys the subtle but surprisingly pervasive influence of Vedantic teachings in America with careful scholarship, deft writing, and wit. . . . A superbly researched and written description of Vedanta’s migration to the United States.” – John J. Prendergast, Ph.D., senior editor of The Sacred Mirror and Listening from the Heart of Silence, Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies.

“Those who read American Veda will be amazed by the tremendous influence India has had on America. Readers will appreciate Goldberg’s attention to details and sense of humor as he deftly takes them on a delightful journey through time, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, connecting the dots that link India’s spiritual and cultural heritage to America’s.” – Lola Williamson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Director, Peace Studies Millsaps College

“This excellent book relates, probably for the first time in a single volume, the history of Hindu-inspired religious movements in America. From karma to gurus to yoga, it’s all here. Based on solid research, but also written in a highly accessible fashion, American Veda is a very good starting point for anyone who is interested in learning more about the influence of Hinduism in America. Goldberg gets it. His writing rings true. This chronicle of what may yet emerge as a distinctively American form of Hinduism will continue to be a valuable reference work for many decades to come.” – Dr. Jeffery D. Life of Yogananda by Philip Goldberg “The long sought and much anticipated synthesis of East and West has yet to fully materialize, although there have been some very profound moves in that direction. It is therefore entirely appropriate that Philip Goldberg delivers a thoroughly readable biography of perhaps the first, and to date the most influential, integrator of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, the remarkable Yogananda. With any attempt at summarizing the life of a stunningly great person, the endeavor itself is fraught with difficulties, but Goldberg takes a very common-sense approach, including aspects of Yogananda’s life that seemed truly divine and deeply inspired, as well as those that were all too human. The result is a brilliant account of what history will recognize as one of the most significant lives of the twentieth century. The question is, when Yogananda himself had already written the wildly popular and very widely read Autobiography of a Yogi, do we really need this new book? Does it justify itself? I believe that it does, very much so. Sympathetic yet critical, the book brings to light an enormous number of facets of Yogananda’s life, times, spiritual realization, culture clashes, and personal dimensions, all of which shed a huge amount of information not only about Yogananda and his own spiritual search, but also about the deeper synthesis of East and West that is still lying in humanity’s future. I highly recommend you read this book, and get a profound reminder of what the spiritual search is all about.” — Ken Wilber, author of The Religion of Tomorrow

“In this intensely researched book, Phil Goldberg describes the deep commitment and tireless effort of Paramahansa Yogananda to bring the spiritual teachings of India to the West. He reveals the many obstacles that Yogananda had to overcome in order to bring a light into the darkness.” — Krishna Das, Chantmaster and author of Chants of a Lifetime

“A precious dive into the life and times of America’s most famous yogi. Anyone who has read the classic Autobiography of a Yogi… will thrill to the untold story of Yogananda’s life in this graceful, insightful biography. It is a worthy companion to Yogananda’s masterwork, informed both by Goldberg’s scholarship and by his deep spiritual practice.” — Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind and Seven Paths to God

Life of Yogananda by Phil Goldberg“With spiritual elegance and integrity, Goldberg provides an intimate portrait of the life of Yogananda, the trailblazing guru of North American yoga’s influential early years. Through engaging stories and unique perspectives, Paramahansaji shines through this biography as an enlightened master and creator of a great spiritual legacy.” — Michael Bernard Beckwith, founder of Agape International Spiritual Center and author of Spiritual Liberation

“Paramahansa Yogananda is probably the dominant figure behind the Western Yoga movement and its spiritual roots, the veritable father of Yoga in the Western world, living and teaching in America for more than three decades. Philip Goldberg presents a detailed and informative biography of the great master, reflecting his daunting challenges in bringing the profound Yoga teachings of self-realization to the United States of the early 20th century.” — Dr. David Frawley, D. Litt., director of American Institute of Vedic Studies and author of Yoga and Ayurveda

“This exceptionally written, wise, profound biography of one of the 20th century’s greatest spiritual pioneers is essential reading for all those who want to understand deeply the growing marriage between Eastern and Western spirituality. I am so moved by and grateful for Phil Goldberg’s humble mastery of tone and truth in this marvelous book.” — Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope and co-author of Savage Grace

“Philip Goldberg has masterfully assembled a colorful tapestry of stories detailing the intricacies and complexities that comprise the life of Paramahansa Yogananda. Goldberg’s work enables us to understand Yogananda as both mundanely human and extraordinary, while providing a detailed inside understanding of this remarkable human being and spiritual leader who has, and will continue to, inspire generations of spiritual seekers. This is a must-read for all who have read Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi and wish to better understand the story behind one of the world’s most remarkable human beings.” — Richard Miller, Ph.D., author of Yoga Nidra and the CD iRest Meditation: Restorative Practices for Health, Resiliency, and Well-Being

“The Life of Yogananda is a tremendous gift: a chance to meet from the ‘outside’ the spiritual genius we met on the ‘inside’ in Autobiography of a Yogi. That book shared what was important to Yogananda; this biography shares why Yogananda is important to you. If you’ve read the Autobiography, you must read the biography. If you haven’t read either, you must read both.” — Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Holy Rascals

“Yogananda was more than just a popular guru who brought Indian spirituality to the United States. He was also a spiritual genius in the art of living, and his impact and legacy transcend the traditional divides of race, ethnicity, nationality, politics, and religion. In The Life of Yogananda, Philip Goldberg meticulously peels back the mystical layers in order to reveal the man behind the myth [and] continues his extraordinary work as our foremost chronicler of Hinduism in the United States.’’ — Varun Soni, Ph.D., Dean of Religious Life and Vice Provost for Campus Wellness and Crisis Intervention, University of Southern California

“When I was 15, Ram Dass gave me a copy of Autobiography of aYogi and the gates of the universe opened. Yogananda’s account of his spiritual journey emboldened me to commence mine. Now, all these years later, Phil Goldberg has compiled the stories behind the stories! What a treasure.” — Mirabai Starr, author of God of Love and Caravan of No Despair

“This book is a gift for anyone interested in the yogic journey. Deeply informed by Phil Goldberg’s years of practice and study, it explores the life of one of the great spiritual masters of the 20th century. Yogananda’s work has had enormous influence on the development of yoga and spirituality in the West, and continues to influence us to this day. In this new biography, Phil offers us a full portrait of an extraordinary man. Merging Yogananda’s own autobiographical accounts of his life with the accounts of his friends and students, this gives us a delightfully written, juicy, and inspiring portrait that takes us right into the heart of the yogic experience.” — Sally Kempton, author of Meditation for the Love of It and Awakening Shakti

“Learning who Yogananda was historically can help us to understand who he is spiritually. As with all great spiritual masters, understanding who Yogananda is spiritually helps us to understand who we deep down really are and are called to be. For me personally, the significance of this book’s account of Yogananda seeding the ancient wisdom of yoga into our Western culture and religious traditions reminds me of my experience of being with Thomas Merton at Gethsemani in the 1960s. Merton told me he practiced yoga. He showed me some yoga postures and gave me a copy of Dechanet’s Christian yoga, which helped me to integrate yoga into my own spiritual practices.” — James Finley, Ph.D., core teacher at the Center for Action and Contemplation, author of Merton’s Palace of Nowhere and Christian Meditation

“The story of meditative, ‘Eastern’ spirituality in the West doesn’t exist without Yogananda; yet the story of Yogananda, in anything like a full telling, hasn’t existed till now. Philip Goldberg, with the clear eyes of the diligent scholar and the open heart of the passionate, lifelong spiritual voyager, is the right person to tell it.” — Dean Sluyter, author of Fear Less and Natural Meditation

“When I was informed about the author’s intention to write this book, I knew that gathering information from reliable sources almost seven decades after the subject’s passing would be a major endeavor. The result is satisfying. It is enjoyable to read, presented in a clear, forthright manner, and is fair and honest.” — Roy Eugene Davis, direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda and founder of Center for Spiritual Awareness

“The book admirers of Yogananda and scholars of Yoga alike have been waiting for. It is a fascinating and inspiring account of the trials and tribulations, successes and indomitable spirit of this remarkable yogi. His achievements are such that religious culture, across nations and traditions, continues to be informed and influenced by his unique vision—whether acknowledged or not. This book tells the story of how he accomplished the extraordinary and, thereby, transformed millions of mundane lives into ones worth living.” — Rita D. Sherma, Ph.D., director and associate professor, Shingal Center for Dharma Studies at Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley

“Every yoga teacher and yoga student owes an enormous debt to Yogananda. Goldberg has done a great service with this engaging book, adding vital details to what the iconic Autobiography of a Yogi revealed about Yogananda’s fascinating life.” — Larry Payne, Ph.D., co-author of Yoga for Dummies and founder of Yoga Therapy Rx and Prime of Life Yoga

“This remarkable book sheds new light on the life of a very human and very spiritual person. Paramahamsa Yogananda, from the time of childhood, exhibited remarkable qualities: charisma, stubbornness, deep devotion, and a willingness to sacrifice in quest of a higher meaning. Through this work, one gains a sense of what guided Yogananda toward greatness: the many cities that shaped his youth, including Gorakhnath, the birthplace of Hatha Yoga, and Varanasi, India’s spiritual center, and Serampore, the home of Christian missionaries who taught Yogananda about Jesus. His success in building schools and meditation centers as well his adept adaptation of new learning technologies all receive fuller treatment here than in any earlier resources. This books is a must-read for all who follow the many paths of Yoga and for all persons interested in American religious history.” — Christopher Key Chapple, Doshi Professor and Director, Master of Arts in Yoga Studies, Loyola Marymount University

“In making Awake, we discovered what a monumental task it is to represent a spiritual giant like Yogananda in all the many layers and facets of his life and personality. Philip Goldberg has done a terrific job of capturing the complexities of such a world teacher. His contribution will be a valued source for anyone interested in the life of this extraordinary individual.” — Paola di Florio, Lisa Leeman, and Peter Rader, filmmakers of Awake: The Life of Yogananda

The book is a fresh look into the life of Paramahansa Yogananda as an organizational leader, spiritual master, and modern-day saint. Goldberg shines a light on Yogananda’s humanity and his divinity, making the book a compelling and inspiring and read. It’s a much-needed gift of hope for our times—a real look at Yogananda’s life with its soul stirring and inspiring message for humanity. I couldn’t put it down.” — Yogacharya Ellen Grace O’Brian, Spiritual Director, Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, and author of The Jewel of Abundance

With The Life of Yogananda, Philip Goldberg has placed himself as a premier historian of American yoga. First he gave us American Veda, tracing the complete trajectory of India’s influence on the American mind, and now, in this excellent biography of Paramahansa Yogananda, he brings into sharp focus the complex life of America’s first guru. This is an important book and I couldn’t put it down.” — Dana Sawyer, professor emeritus of religion and philosophy, Maine College of Art; author of Aldous Huxley: A Biography and Huston Smith: Wisdomkeeper

“The Life of Yogananda is a thrilling read and a definitive sourcebook for this great master’s life. Anyone interested in Yogananda will find this book a grand discovery for its little-known stories and details about his eventful life. With great care, integrity, devotion, and excellent research, Phil Goldberg has given us a revealing and accurate look into what has made Yogananda so well loved by millions of spiritual seekers.” — Joseph Bharat Cornell, author of Deep Nature Play and AUM: The Melody of Love

“In The Life of Yogananda, Philip Goldberg has taken on a daunting challenge—writing a biography of a yogi who has already written the most famous yogi autobiography in history! It turns out he is more than up to the task. Goldberg’s love and knowledge of the Vedas, matched with his keen perception of American history and culture make him the perfect one to tell the story of the individual who, more than anyone else, brought yoga to the West. In writing about a beloved and sometimes controversial figure, Goldberg never falls into either hero worship or innuendo. I guarantee you will enjoy reading this book as much as he obviously enjoyed writing it.” — Steve Bhaerman, aka cosmic comic Swami Beyondananda, co-author with Bruce Lipton of Spontaneous Evolution

“With this clear and engaging biography, Philip Goldberg has brought back to life–as he did in his acclaimed American Veda—a period of intense spiritual seeking in American history: the first half of the twentieth century. It was not only the sixties generation that was drawn to Indian philosophy and yogic practice. The way for the famous gurus of the sixties and seventies had first been paved by two towering figures: Swami Vivekananda and Paramahansa Yogananda. The prejudice which these figures faced also comes to life in this book: the resistance to new and ‘foreign’ ideas, which is the other side of the coin of American openness and curiosity. Yogananda’s many difficult years of struggle after coming to America—his tragedies and triumphs—are amply covered in this work, which will soon undoubtedly become an indispensable book for all of us who are interested in the transmission of Hindu thought and practice to America, and in the transformation of global society through yogic principles.” — Jeffery D. Long, professor of religion and Asian studies, Elizabethtown College

“Phil Goldberg provides a much-needed and utterly fascinating link to the understanding of one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time. He has done his homework and we are all the beneficiaries! The Life of Yogananda has been exhaustively researched and painstakingly presented by a man uniquely qualified with a deep understanding of east and west cultures, spiritual traditions, psychology, and historical relevance. Goldberg weaves together all available and relevant sources to create a rich tapestry of storytelling, understanding, and inspiration. Through Yogananda’s life, we enter a world of wonder and spirit and adventure. The book is filled with information, but more importantly with insight. It weaves the life of this global emissary with the lessons Yogananda learned and the wisdom we can all take away. There are nuggets on every page of this inspirational, unbiased, 360-degree panorama.” — Joseph Deitch, chairman of Commonwealth Financial Network and author of Elevate--Yogacara69 (Diskussion) 09:53, 22.

Jul. 2020 (CEST)Beantworten
