Massimo Gerardi, born in Italy, received his first dance training in Udine at Scuola di Danza Ceron and later in Reggio Emilia at Corso di Perfezionamento Aterballetto. He began his professional dancing career in 1986 at the Balletto Comunale di Firenze, followed by engagements at Aterballetto, Stadttheater Augsburg and Teatro la Fenice-Venezia. From 1991 to 1998 he was a soloist dancer at Ballett Nürnberg, where he also presented his first choreographic works. Further engagements as a soloist dancer: Ballett Dortmund, Ballett Linz and Staatstheater Oldenburg.

He danced in choreographies by William Forsythe – Rui Horta – Jacopo Godani - Amedeo Amodio – Giuseppe Carbone – David Sutherland – Gregor Zöllig – Antonio Gomes – Robert Poole - Jean Renshaw - Martin Stiefermann – Birgit Cullberg – Amanda Miller, among others.

In 1999 he was selected by Jorma Uotinen for “SiWiC”, a coaching project for choreographers in Zürich. In 2000 he attended a dance-for-video course with Thierry de Mey and Philippe Decouflé and received a scholarship for choreographic studies hosted by the Icelandic Ballet, Nederlands Danstheater, Göteborg Balletten and Komische Oper Berlin.

As a freelance choreographer, he created various choreographies for Theater Kiel, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Theater Vorpommern Stralsund/Greifswald, Theater Aachen, Theatre de S. Quentin en Yvelines, Ballett Nürnberg, Ballett Linz, Theatre Odeon / Bucharest, Stadttheater Giessen a.o. He won prizes at choreographic competitions in Firenze, Treviso, Düsseldorf and Hannover.

Some of his choreographies have also been invited to European dance festivals: Bolzano Danza, Mittelfest Cividale, Festival Shakespeare Mataró, SATFestival Barcelona, Schrittmacher Festival Aachen, Festival Stummer Schrei Tirol, Tanzwoche Dresden, Odeon Tanz Wien, Internationales Tanzfestival Kassel, Festival MOVE Krefeld, eXplore Dance Festival Bucharest, Sibiu International Dance Festival, a.o.

From 2001 to 2006 he was ballet master at Staatstheater Oldenburg and later was invited to different theatres, dance companies and academies as a guest teacher both in ballet and contemporary dance.

In 2003 he founded together with Achim Conrad and Emanuele Soavi the dance and theatre group “movingtheatre.de” based in Cologne. The movingtheatre.de productions “Pop Eye” and “Site-specific” were awarded the Dance Theatre Prize of Cologne in 2006 and 2009.

As a full-time member of the faculty of the “Hochschule für Musik und Tanz” in Köln from 2009 - 2011, he taught contemporary classes, partnering and improvisation followed by an engagement as ballet master and rehearsal director at Internationaal Danstheater Amsterdam.      

In 2012-2013 he was faculty teacher for contemporary dance at Palucca Hochschule für Tanz in Dresden.                                        

In 2014/2105 he has been a guest teacher at Theater Heidelberg/Nanine Linning Dance Company, guest choreographer at Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, at Theater Bielefeld, at Landesbühnen Sachsen, and directed  an Opera at Staatsschauspiel Dresden.

In 2016 he created a Concert-Performance with musicians and dancers for Lucerne Festival taught in the didactic Project "Apprendre a Danser" in Tunis and was guest teacher at the Korean National University of Arts in Seoul.

In 2017 Interim Director at Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo and Guest Choreographer at Theater Giessen.

In 2018, together with the choreographer Claudio Cangialosi, he created the piece MANkind in co-production with the Centre Choréographique National de Danse Mulhouse and choreographed BREAK // DANCE for the Leipzig Dance Theater. Later he choreographed the performance on post-colonialism CLASH at Deutsche Hygiene Museum Dresden, which was presented in 2019 at the Festival Journée Choréographiques de Carthage, in collaboration with the Association Hayyou'Raqs (Tunis).

After staging a short piece for the American Dance Festival in Durham (USA) in 2019, he choreographed the piece HEIM@ in an installation by  Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, which was premiered at Deutsche Hygiene Museum in Dresden. This production was also a collaboration with BODHI PROJECT Salzburg.

In 2021/22 he has been company manager and choreographer at Theater Giessen/Tanzcompagnie Giessen and currently he is rehersal director and contemporary-dance faculty memeber at Ballettakademie der Wiener Staatsoper.

Massimo Gerardi   is a certified dance teacher (Master of Arts) by Palucca Hochschule  für Tanz Dresden.
