English: Unidentified Inuit man with a kayak A photograph of an Inuit man supporting a kayak while holding a double-ended paddle. Seen with him is the seal hunting gear. This includes a harpoon, with a norsaq attached, stored along the side of the kayak. The rope for the harpoon can be seen attached to the inflated seal-skin 'bladder', and the stand in front of the coaming was used to store the rope. The man is wearing a sealskin tuilik and appears to be smoking a clay pipe. It is not known where this photograph was taken. The Phoenix visited four settlements along the west coast of Greenland: Holsteinborg, Godhavn, Proven, and Upernarvick (now w:Sisimiut, w:Qeqertarsuaq, w:Kangersuatsiaq, and w:Upernavik) between 8 June and 21 July 1854. |
