Alonzo Judson Abbey

US-amerikanischer Musiker, Musiklehrer, Komponist und Musikverleger

Alonzo Judson Abbey (auch: A. J. Abbey; * 1. März 1825 in Olive Township, Ulster County, New York, Vereinigte Staaten; † 24. März 1887 in Chester, Morris County, New Jersey, Vereinigte Staaten) war ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, Musiklehrer, Komponist und Musikverleger.[1]

Leben Bearbeiten

Alonzo Judson Abbeys Eltern waren David and Nancy Farnham Abbey.[2] Er hatte einen Bruder, Horatio Gates Abbey (1818–1879), der auch Liedtexte verfasste. A. J. Abbey unterrichtete einige Jahre Musik. So unterrichtete er Gesangsklassen in Sonntagsschulen wie 1873 in Carbondale in Pennsylvania.[3] Daneben arbeitete er als Musikverleger. Er schrieb Texte und Melodien zu Kirchenliedern.

Am 23. Februar 1848 heiratete er die am 13. Mai 1829 geborene Margaret Rutledge. Am 16. Juli 1850 wurde ihr Kind Frances C. Abbey geboren, am 22. September 1855 Flora J. Abbey. Am 14. Dezember 1862 heiratete er die am 2. September 1838 geborene Mary Elizabeth Topping. Mit ihr hatte er sechs Kinder, George Topping Abbey, Mary Farnham Abbey, William Bradbury Abbey, Jarties Edward Abbey, Ida Haines Abbey und Charles Evert Abbey. Er starb am 24. Mai 1887 in Chester, wo er auf dem Pleasant Hill Cemetery begraben wurde.[2]

Cooling Bearbeiten

Cooling ist eine 1858 von Alonzo Judson Abbey komponierte Melodie. Sie wurde das erste Mal in The American Choir 1858 veröffentlicht und war Ende des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Vereinigten Staaten weit verbreitet. Sie wurde mit vielen verschiedenen Texten unterlegt und so in verschiedenen Fassungen in viele Gesangbücher aufgenommen. So war Abbey auch als Komponist von Cooling bekannt und wurde auch so in Modern music and musicians for vocalists : ... including the world's one hundred greatest songs von Louis Charles Elson (1848–1920) bezeichnet.[1][7][Digitalisat 10]
