BeschreibungWest Window, New Church of St. Mary of Zion, Axum, Ethiopia (2844667098).jpg
At least I assume this is the west window; we were there near the end of the day, and the gorgeous glass was receiving full sun.
I fell in love with this building. Why?
First, it is a beautiful and unexpected example of midcentury architecture that expresses Ethiopia's desire to leave its mark among the leading design statements of its age.
Second, I am touched by the faith and optimism implicit in the decision to erect the church. In hindsight, the seeds of Emperor Haile Selassie I's downfall were probably already planted when the church was consecrated, yet the Imperium proceeded with statements such as this as if its future were vast as its past.
Ok, so I fell in love with this place, but as is so often the case with love, I was unable to express my feelings - in this case, through my photographs. I took pictures of details that interested me, but I didn't capture the whole thing.
Part of it is the scale of the building, which is enormous. Also, it is difficult to capture the entire structure, interior or exterior, without special lenses and/or vantage points I wasn't able to visit.
So, please do Google the new Church of St. Mary of Zion and see for yourselves what I am talking about. If you're not as taken with the church as I was, well, tastes differ.
