Here he appears in Philadelphia on his first trip Northafter the war. His bearing is that of a man relieved of a vast responsibility, butwith the marks of it still upon him. He is thinner than the full-chested soldier inthe photograph taken in 1803, after the fall of Vicksburg. His dress is careless, asalways, but shows more attention than when he was in the field. He looks out ofthe picture with the unflinching eyes that had been able to penetrate the future andsee the wisdom of the plan that proved the final undoing of the Confederacy.
