out with a loud voice, My God, MyGod, why hast thou forsaken me? One of the men who were standing near, when he heard him cry, ran andtook a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and lifted it up on a reed to his mouthand gave him to drink. When Jesus, therefore, had taken the vinegar, he said,It is finished. He meant that the work which he had come to do, and thepunishment which he had come to bear, for us, were finished. And he bowedhis head and died. Then the curtain, called the veil, which hung in the temple,■was torn in two from the top to the bottom; the earth shook, the rocks werebroken in pieces, and the graves were opened, and many of those persons, who,■while they lived, had served the Lord, arose and came out of their graves afterJesus himself had risen from the dead; and they went into Jerusalem, and wereseen by many there.
