Tim Blanning

Timothy Charles William Blanning, FBA, (* 21. April 1942) ist ein britischer Historiker mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der europäischen Geschichte der Neuzeit. Er lehrte an der Universität Cambridge.

Leben

Tim Blanning besuchte die King’s School in Bruton, studierte danach am Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge und wurde dort 1967 promoviert. 1972 wurde er an der University of Cambridge als Assistant lecturer angestellt. Er wurde 1976 Lecturer und 1987 zum Reader ernannt, schließlich 1992 zum Professor berufen. Bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2009 lehrte er moderne europäische Geschichte.

Blanning veröffentlichte 1974 eine Studie zur Geschichte der Stadt Mainz im 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Mainzer Republik. Sein 1983 erschienenes Buch The French Revolution in Germany: Occupation and Resistance in the Rhineland, 1792–1802 behandelt ebenfalls diese Zeit. Über die Französische Revolution handelte auch sein Buch The Origins of the French Revolutionary Wars (1986). 1994 veröffentlichte er eine Biografie des Kaisers Joseph II. Es folgten einige kulturhistorische Arbeiten. Weitere Biografien behandelten 2015 Friedrich den Großen und 2017 Georg I.

Blanning wurde 1990 zum Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) gewählt. Blanning erhielt 1998 einen Doctor of Letters der University of Cambridge. 2016 wurde er für sein Buch über Friedrich den Großen mit der British Academy Medal ausgezeichnet.
