ut^ short, inserted in a deep cavity. Calyx closed, set inan irregular basin. Skin fine golden yellow, thinly sprinkledwith dots, sometimes slightly netted with thin russet. Flesh yel-low^ish, tender, juicy, almost melting, with ^a rich, refreshing,vinous, aromatic flavour; core rather large. November to Feb-ruary. Gravenstein. Thomp, Lind, Grave Slije. A superb looking German apple, which originated at Graven-stein, in Holstein, and is thought one of the finest apples of theNorth of Europe. It fully sustains its reputation here, and is,unquestionably, a fruit of first rate quality. Fruit large, ratherflattened, and a little one-sided or angular, broadest at the base.Stalk quite short and strong, deeply set. Calyx large, in a wide,deep, rather irregular basin. Skin greenish yellow at first, butbecoming bright yellow^, and beautifully dashed and pencilled,and marbled with light and deep red and orange. Flesh tenderand crisp, with a high flavoured, somewhat aromatic taste. THE APPLE. 81

, Cfravenstein. Ripens with us in September and October, but will keep a monthlonger. The trees are very thrifty, strong growers, and bearyoung. Green Sweet. Honey GreeniBg. Tree, vigorous and productive. Fruit medium, somewhatconic. Skin green, sometimes becoming a little yellow at matu-nty, covered with greenish or light russet dots. Stalk of mediumlength. Cavity rather deep, covered with russet; basin shallowand abrupt, somewhat farrowed. Flesh whitish, tender, juicy,sweet, with a vinous, refreshing flavour. December to March. * Hall. HaUs Seedling.HaUs Red.Jenny Seedling. Origin on the grounds of Mr. Hall, Franklin county. NorthCarolina, Tree of moderate growth, hardy, upright, with long,slender, reddish branches, and remarkably firm wood.
