  • Significance: William Wescott Browning came to Texas in the 1850s from South Carolina. In 1857 the 49-year-old Browning agreed to purchase 1070 acres from the Anna Doughtry estate. He and his wife, Elizabeth Lewis Gilmer, then began construction of the two-story Greek Revival house on this land in the northeast corner of the James Stephens League in Washington County. ... W.W. Browning's influence was felt throughout Washington County. He organized a company to build The Washington County Railroad, served as President of the Board of Trustees of Chappell Hill Female College, offered active and generous support of the Methodist Church and he was even involved in one of the earliest documented efforts to produce oil in Texas. Browning Plantation Foundation Inc., a private group who purchased the 0.767 acre site and vacant house in 1977, intends to restore the historic house as a museum.
